The Ouch at the Pump

Does $4 for a gallon of gas have you thinking about your driving habits?

The national average price for a gallon of gas is now near $4.00. We have not seen this pricing level since 2008 when alarms sounded, SUV sales plunged, and small four-cylinder car prices soared.

Guess what? The same thing is happening right now, and there is no way to know when the price of gas will return to “normal” levels.

Here are just a couple of simple things you can do to stretch your tank of gas just a little further:

  • Fill up your tank at night when the temperatures are cooler.
  • Check your tire pressure regularly.
  • Coast to the stoplight (this is better for your brakes, too!).
  • Accelerate slower and drive a little slower.
  • Plan and accumulate your errands to make fewer trips.
  • Carpool to work a couple of days a week.
  • Work from home a few days each week, if possible.
